A touch of whimsy

The other day on our way to school and work we passed the house with a shrub in the front yard decorated for spring. It was so whimiscal that I just had to turn around and make a photo of it. Hope this brings you a smile today.

It’s been entirely too long since I posted a Savory Samplings piece. Honestly it’s been too long since I’ve read my food blogs too. I went to read them today and found I had over 320 new posts to read! Actually it’s been fun catching up and seeing what everyone in the blog-o-sphere is cooking/baking/making. I’ve broken this into two posts as the list of what I wanted to inlude is well it’s more then 5 recipes! Part two will be posted on Thursday.

Adventures of Kitchen Girl:  Orange Creamsicle Cookies, and perfect for St’ Patrick’s Day Mint Chocolate Candy Cookies

Coconut & Lime: Pork & Shrimp Eggrolls, Eggplant & Fennel Calzones, Rachel’s Ultimate Crab Dip (I’m a sucker for Crab - I’d take crab over lobster anyday!), and Blueberry-Balsamic Slow Cooker Pork Ribs

Cookbook Catchall:  Quick Bake Raspberry Rolls (not to forget the food photography here….I’m in love with!)

Elle’s New England Kitchen: Raspberry Chocolate Chip Blondies, Choc-nana Muffins w/ PB filling & PB Crumble (need I say more?!?!)

Homesick Texan: Chipotle Mac & Cheese with Bacon (I may just fall in love w/ Mac & Cheese all over again!)

Life’s Ambrosia: Lemon Pepper Shrimp w/Fusilli, Edamame Hummus

I was very happy to read today that Johnny’s Selected Seeds was named the Business of the Year by the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce.

Johnny’s has long been one of my favorite places to order seeds from and I LOVE that they are here in Maine. Rob Johnston, who was in 1973 only 22 years old, started the company with just $500! The company is now employee owned and employs over 80 full-time folks and offers over 1,000 seed products. Just last month the company appeared on Martha Stewart with their Quick Garden Hoop (used in the White House Garden). I’ve had my eye on one of these and am seriously thinking about ordering a couple for my garden beds here at home.

On their website you can sign up for their newsletter, order a catalog, order seeds and take advantage of their really handy Seed Starting Date Spreadsheet. They also have a video page that has a lot of useful information, or you could visit their YouTube Channel.

If you have been thinking about ordering seeds or starting a garden I highly recommend you go visit Johnny’s online or if you’re in Winslow stop on into their store. You could even take a tour of the farm July through September at the trail fields on Foss Hill Road in Albion, Maine, 10 miles east of Waterville. I’m thinking I may have to take a trip this summer!

I’m very happy to hear that the Mid-Maine Chamber has recognized Johnny’s with this great honor. Congratulations to everyone  – I look forward to more great seeds and garden tools.

Recently there’s been an upswing in Rockland news, in case you haven’t heard, Rockland has a sinkhole. Now that might not be exciting news to those of you who live in a city with more than 8,000 people, but here, we’ve been as curious as cats to know what the deal is. Imagine being the police officer who had to follow up on a phone call from a driver who says their car has been damaged by a pot hole on Old County Road. Now imagine pulling up to a hole that is still crumbling (as of Thursday measured 30 feet wide by 65 feet deep).

Rockland has a long history of limestone quarries and if you drive along Old County Road from one end of Rockland to the other and into Thomaston you’ll see them on both sides of the road. What’s interesting, I think, is that the road was built over these tunnels that run between quarries. Given that they line the length of Old County road – I wonder how many more are just waiting to open up.

It’s taken a few weeks to figure out how to repair the “state’s largest pothole” (perhaps the countries?) as contractors can’t just dump dirt or cement into the hole as the tunnel carries storm water into the quarry.  Just last week it’s been decided large boulders will go in first so the water can flow around and then filled in. So they are now removing any pavement left over the hole making the size grow to 65 feet deep, 25 feet wide and 120 feet long!

In the meantime, just to show you the fun we are having with it, there is now a Facebook group called “Survivors of the Rockland Maine Sinkhole” complete with eye witness accounts and photos. It’s fun to live in a small town!

Oh and if you’re looking for photos – WMTW has a slideshow of the sinkhole earlier on. And of course more updated photos if you join the Facebook group.

Buckle Up

One of the passengers that sail on the Maine Windjammer I work for sent this video to me. Both my boss and I had tears in our eyes. This is one heck of a PSA for wearing your seat belt.

Larry’s Proverbs

A lot of the passengers on the schooner have become like family to me. I just love when they call to chat, have an NCIS conference call, or send me funny and random emails. Here is one from a fella in Missouri, whom I affectionately refer to as Mr. President. I got quite the chuckle out of them. Hope you do too.

Larry’s Proverbs

1. A day without sunshine is like night.

2. On the other hand, you have different fingers.

3. 42.7 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot.

4. 99 percent of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

5. Remember, half the people you know are below average.

6. He who laughs last, thinks slowest.

7. Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

8. The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese in the trap.

9. Support bacteria. They’re the only culture most people have.

10. A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

11. Change is inevitable, except from vending machines..

12. If you think nobody cares, try missing a couple of payments.

13. How many of you believe in psycho kinesis? Raise my hand.

14. OK, so what’s the speed of dark?

15. When everything is coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.

16. Hard work pays off in the future… Laziness pays off now.

17. How much deeper would the ocean be without sponges?

18. Eagles may soar, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines.

19. What happens if you get scared half to death, twice?

20. Why do psychics have to ask you your name?

21. Inside every older person is a younger person wondering, ‘What the heck happened?’

22. Just remember — if the world didn’t suck, we would all fall off.

23. Light travels faster than sound. That’s why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

24. Life isn’t like a box of chocolates. It’s more like a jar of jalapeno’s. What you do today, might burn your butt tomorrow.

A winning list

I decided not to post the entire winning list of Oscar winners because if you cared about who won, you either watched them or you have looked it up by now.

I was happy to see that Jeff Bridges won Best Actor for Crazy Heart and Sandra Bullock won Best Actress for The Blind Side. I was also happy to see that Best Original Song went to Ryan Bingham and T-Bone Burnett for “The Weary Kind” from Crazy Heart.  If you haven’t heard it – it’s a good one.

One award I was a little disappointed with (winning that is) was Logorama. Don’t get me wrong – the creativity that went into it was really amazing. Having seen all the animated shorts nominated “The Lady and the Reaper” was my favorite. I loved it so much I actually showed my boss at work. We had a good chuckle. It starts out a little sad, but then I couldn’t help but laugh. If you’ve got 8 minutes to spare – give it a watch.

Sidenote: Did you know that Sandra Bullock also won a Razzie Award this year? And that she accepted the award in person? She is only the second actress to have accepted her Razzie in person (Halle Berry did in 2005 for Catwoman). Sandra is also the only actress to have won both a Razzie and Oscar in the same year. You know, just in case you were wondering.

I would never have this much patience to put something like this together. The time and energy alone…. Sit back and enjoy the next few minutes.
